What should students do to be safe when using email and the Internet?
Everyday we see technology being used more and more in the classroom. While there are many benefits, there are also dangers associated with using technology such as the Internet. “Safe Kids” lists rules to go over with students for teachers and parents prior to using technology. For example, the first rule is “I will not give out personal information such as my address, telephone number, parents’ work address/telephone number without my parents’ permission.” These simple rules posted for students can be a constant reminder of how to stay safe while using the Internet. |

Specifically for Teachers, Robert Lucas points out what online safety is, and what it is not, in “The Teacher’s Guide to Keeping Students Safe Online.” This was very eye opening due to the fact he states “online safety is… knowledge.” When students are informed and aware of the possible dangers, they will be able to spot danger as it arises. If they not are informed, we could be putting them into an unknown dangerous situation. Lucas uses the Chinese proverb, “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.” Instead of just blocking websites, we need to teach students how to be safe online so it can help them their entire life.
